Steve Stark invited us to hike his property 20 miles up DIM. So Friday morning a blue carload drove up to join Steve and Don on a Yaktrax hike around the lake.
The back road to the property was partly covered in some snow and ice, but not deep enough to warrant snowshoes. The same can probably be said for Monday's hike on Mt Ashland.
It was a bright sunny day at 4,700' with temps in the mid to high 30s.
We hiked the road in, accompanied by loud crunchy sounds with each step.
When we got to the lake we were surprised to see it frozen over.
We hiked around the lake, crossing the earthen dam on the west side and continuing onto the campsite. We stopped to take pictures of snow-capped Mt. McLoughlin rising over the frozen lake.
We got lawn chairs from the Airstream trailer and placed them around the fire pit.
We had some lunch topped off with chocolate and Don's homemade cookies.
After lunch, we ventured outside the property and into the green forest.
Steve and Don showed us more snow-covered roads and trails, and then we came to the burnt forest area with many recently downed trees. We made our way through the burnt wreckage and up the front road to Steve's 40 acres.
We then completed our circuit of the lake and headed back to the SUVs parked just off DIM.
It was a fun sunny day and we had hiked 4.5 miles through forests and around the lake.
Thanks, Steve and Don for this special outing.
Happy Trails,
Rich
